What is Bronze Sheet?
The Friction-free One
Bronze sheet is an alloy, which is basically a mixture of more than one metal. Our bronze is the phosphor variety, which means it’s made of mostly copper, with a small amount of tin and an even tinier amount of phosphorous. This bronze is strong and resistant to corrosion, and it conducts heat and electricity extremely well. No wonder that bronze has been used for coins, medals and armour for centuries. Our phosphor bronze sheet has the pinkish hue you’d associate with copper, but the addition of tin toughens it up and makes it much stronger. Bronze is often associated with a darker colour like that often seen on statues, but this shade develops over time through the process of oxidisation. Unlike steel, bronze won’t spark when it’s struck with another instrument, making it a favourite for hammers and mallets, and on oil rigs or other places where there’s a high risk of fire. We supply bronze plate to a huge variety of customers, including shipbuilders, jewellers, artists and many more. At Buy Metal Online, we pride ourselves on our free cutting service, which allows you to order precisely the amount of sheet metal you need. There’s no minimum order, either, so we’ll supply as little or as much bronze as you need for your project.
Musical instruments (in particular cymbals), coins, engravings, jewellery, sculpture, plumbing, electricity, door fittings, interiors, door knockers, letterboxes, signage, hammers and other tools, bells, springs, washers, bearings, shipping components and lots more.
How it's made:
Firstly, cassiterite (the ore form of tin) is mined from underground. Next, the mineral is heated up and melted (a process called smelting) so that the tin can be extracted. Finally, molten tin and molten copper are combined, creating a mix that cools to become bronze. In the Bronze Age, this meticulous and risky task was performed over open fires. These days, thankfully, it is taken care of by factory machinery.

In early 2016, an enormous bronze drum was officially certified the largest in the world. Measuring 4.2 by 2.6 metres and weighing almost 7 tonnes, the Hechi bronze drum took 20 workers over six months to make. Located in Yangshuo County, Guilin, Guangxi, China, the Hechi drum is a celebration of the area’s heritage and traditional bronze drum casting method.
