What is Big Bright Spangled Galvanised Steel Sheet?

Star-studded Steel

Once upon a time, all hot-dipped galvanised steel bore a unique, geometric pattern. The process of bathing the steel in a bath of scorching zinc left behind a unique effect on the surface of the metal: large, repeated snowflakes or six-pointed stars. As time went on, demand for galvanised steel sheets changed and consumers started to want a smoother surface for their projects. This, combined with the desire for lead-free metals, meant that the spangles all but disappeared from production. They were still there, but had been made invisible to the naked eye. For two decades, this plain version of galvanised steel plate became the norm. Until recently, that is, when consumers began to miss the star-spangled steel of days gone by and realise that it actually looked quite good. That’s why big, bright, spangled steel is back, by popular demand.  Sourced and produced in Asia, our star-spangled steel had a bold, reflective pattern that’s as dazzling as it is utilitarian and industrial.

Good for: Art installations, sculptures, decorative applications. This is a rare breed of galvanised steel. Properties include weather-resistance and a unique aesthetic.

How it’s made: The process of galvanisation involves steel sheet being treated to an extra-hot bath of molten zinc. This causes a chemical reaction which leaves the metal with an ultra-hardy coating of zinc carbonate that’s brilliant at beating the elements. The speed at which the steel is cooled down after its very hot bath, the alloys involved and the purity of the zinc used all affect the size and appearance of the crystallites (the snowflake, star effect or spangle) on the steel’s surface. When the zinc is cooled to below its melting point, its previously randomly-scattered atoms form a very structured arrangement, giving it the six point star we know and love.

Benefits:

·  Industrial-looking

·  Hardy

·  Unique pattern

·  Weather-resistant
