The term “mild steel” is used to describe low-carbon steel. While mild steel is still strong and tough, it can be also strengthened in the process of carburising – heat treatment using a source of carbon. It is also more malleable, weldable, and ductile. It is also more cost-effective and easier to form.
Do you require your sheet/s cut to size? If so please select the master sheet in the size closest to the size that you require and add you cutting instructions in your basket.

Where is mild steel used?
Mild steel has many applications that include construction (steel building frames are strong, and also meet seismic or wind requirements), machine parts, and pipelines.
As mild steel is difficult to break and easy to form, it is also used in sculptures and outdoor designs (e.g. fences). To prevent corrosion, it is usually galvanised or painted. You probably use or see mild steel products every day in wires, nails, decorations, and many furniture elements. Even road signs are made of low carbon steel!
Because of its high amount of iron and ferrite, this type of steel can be magnetic which makes it the perfect choice to create a magnetic board with.

Iron Zinc (IZ), gets its name from the iron zinc alloy it is coated with. Even though it has the same centre as galvanised, the different coating gives it a whole new bunch of properties and allows it to be specialised for different applications. IZ or galvanneal as it is sometimes referred to, provides a matte and consistent grey coloured finish and is more brittle and harder than galvanised. Famous for its welding, bending and forming ability makes it a favourite within the car and door manufacturing industries, especially with its high-quality painting properties and the extra scratch resistance given by its coat.
For IZ (Galvanneal) products please contact Sara, Jess, Rosey or Rebecca on sales@buymetalonline.co.uk or 0191 2646464.
What do you get when you cross mild steel with zinc? A durable, versatile metal that fares brilliantly in storage and transit. This is Zintec steel sheet and it’s one of the most popular metals for use in car bodies, electronics, white goods and a whole lot more. It’s just the job if you don’t quite need the weather-proof properties of galvanised steel, but you do need a steel sheet metal that won’t rust easily. Thanks to a clever electromagnetic process, the steel is covered in a thin layer of zinc, which makes it extra strong. It’s also smooth, making it an excellent base for enamelling and powder-coating.
