If you're looking for a cheaper alternative to Corten steel, weathering steel could be perfect for your project. Weathering steel possesses the same great properties as Corten steel, but as it doesn't carry the brand name, it costs less. Just like Corten, weathering steel starts out blue-grey in colour and weathers to a rust-coloured finish. The orange patina protects the metal from corrosion and takes 6-9 months to develop.
Please note: these sheets will arrive in their natural form, ready to weather over a period of 6-9 months. If you need your steel to arrive with the orange coating already in place, see our pre-weathered Corten steel.
When weathering steel is exposed to the elements, it reacts with oxygen and moisture in the atmosphere, a process called oxidisation. When oxidisation occurs, the metal develops a distinctive orange coating, known as a patina. This exterior coating protects the internal steel. While the auburn-hue might look like rust, it doesn't penetrate the steel, meaning the metal does not weaken or depreciate. With its good looks and lasting durability, weathering steel is a big hit with designers.
Weathering steel is a more affordable choice than Corten steel for a broad range of projects, including landscaping, art and architecture
We supply weathering steel panels in a huge variety of thicknesses and sizes and we can cut it to custom sizes, so you can just order what you need.
How it’s made:
Weathering steel is an alloy; the addition of nickel, copper and chromium at production means that as the steel is exposed to the elements it develops its protective patina.
Good for: External cladding, marine projects, architecture, water features, outdoor planters, sculptures, design features, signage.
Benefits:
- Durable
- Low maintenance
- Weather-resistant
- Visually pleasing

What is Aluminium Sheet?
The Lightweight One
Ultra-ductile, rust resistant and super-light, our sheet aluminium is suitable for a multitude of uses. This nonmagnetic, widely recycled metal is perhaps most well-known for its role in drinks cans and other packaging. Thanks to its lightweight properties, though, it also aces aircraft engineering, luggage components, bicycles and auto parts. What’s more, aluminium is incredibly resistant to corrosion, making it a clever choice for windows, roofing and other construction jobs. Aluminium is easily identifiable by its bright, silvery sheen. Just like the other metals we sell, we can provide your sheet aluminium in exactly the size you need, meaning no excess product will go to waste. There’s no minimum order, too, so you can order as much or as little aluminium as you need.
Thicknesses: 0.9mm, 1.2mm, 1.5mm, 2mm, 3mm, 4mm, and 6mm thick sheet.
Good for:
Packaging, drinks cans, foil sheets, cookware, home appliances, signage, storage tanks, trailers, welding, car panels, spacecraft, aerospace engineering, furniture, gutters, awnings, roofing, siding, luggage, bicycle components, ships, military vehicles, armour.
How it's made:
Get ready for a quick science lesson: the process of making aluminium sheet begins with bauxite, a soil-like substance that’s mined from underground. Clay is washed off the bauxite, which then goes through a grinding machine, before being plunged into a hot bath of caustic soda and lime. The caustic soda and lime refine the bauxite, extracting aluminium oxide. The aluminium oxide is filtered and heated, and by now takes the form of white powder. Next, electricity and carbon are combined with the aluminium oxide to create aluminium; an electrical current is passed between a negative carbon cathode and a positive carbon anode. The anode and the oxygen in the aluminium oxide react, producing carbon dioxide. This process creates liquid aluminium, which is moulded into ingots ready to be rolled out into aluminium sheets at the factory.
Benefits:
- Low density
- Versatile
- Corrosion-resistant
- Recyclable

Mild Steel Welding Rods 3.2mm - E6818-W2 4kg Pack
If you want to read what the manufacturer says then read below but if you want the overview then this bit is for you. The MacTrode E6818-W2 rod is a low hydrogen MMA rod that is designed specifically for weathering steels such as Corten.
Because of the above if you get these rods damp and require to rebake them then it does require a higher heat for a slightly longer than normal time. 300 to 350 degrees C for 1 to 2 hours.
These rods are made in the UK.
A low hydrogen, basic flux coated electrode on a low carbon mild steel core wire with an extruded moisture resistant chemically basic flux which has controlled iron powder addition. The moisture resistant coating gives a very low weld metal hydrogen levels. The electrode recovery rate in respect to the core wire is approx. 120%. Smooth arc, low spatter, easy strike and restrike. The electrode is mainly used for weathering steels containing a similar controlled addition & is claimed to offer a threefold improvement in corrosion resistance compared with plain C, Mn steels. The weld metal also resists preferential corrosion in sea water, particularly in arctic waters high in oxygen & salinity,
& has applications for welding micro alloys & carbon manganese steels in ice breaker vessels & offshore structures. Applications also include architectural structures, bridges & exhaust gas flues. Materials to be welded include Corten A, B1 (b. steel, US Steels) and other proprietary designations. BS4360 Grade WR50A to WR50C, ASTM A588 Grades A, B, C, K. Din 1.8960, 1.8961, 1.8963.

Pickled and Oiled Hot Rolled Steel Sheets
The smoother steel
Rolling, pickling and oiling might all sound like they’re something to do with food, but before you get hungry, remember that this is a metal website and in this case we’re talking about steel (sorry!) When metal goes through any hot process, it can be left with a residue or scaling on its surface, which, when exposed to moisture, can turn to rust. This can be avoided by giving the steel a treatment to which smoothes things over, called pickling. Afterwards, the material is rinsed before a protective layer of oil blocks out the elements and gives this metal its flawless looks and strong performance. It’s perfect if your project requires a metal with a totally blemish-free surface: think painting, powder-coating and furnishings. As with all our products, hot rolled pickled and oiled steel sheet (also known as oiled steel sheet and pickled steel sheet) can be trimmed to the precise size you need, with no minimum order. Our hot rolled steel prices are highly competitive; just select what you need in the boxes above, or call us to take advantage of our free cutting service.
Good for: Radiators, metal furniture, domestic appliances, powder-coating, painting ...this oiled steel is perfect for any other situation in which a smooth surface is paramount.
How it’s made:
The process of making hot rolled steel leads to oxidisation, meaning a layer of scale, impurities and debris can be left behind. In order to prevent rust from forming on the surface of the metal when it is exposed to the air, this scale needs to go. Pickling takes care of this: by dipping the steel sheet into exactly the right acid, the oxide is dissolved and the metal is de-scaled. The ‘scale jacket’ that’s removed is a very thin layer, usually a tiny fraction of a centimetre thick, but it makes all the difference to the finished product’s appearance: metal with scale has a grey, dull appearance, whereas that which has been pickled comes out with a gleaming sheen. Once the scale is gone, pickled steel is rinsed, before being given an extra layer of protection from the elements in the form of an oil barrier.
Benefits:
- Ultra-smooth surface
- Protection from the elements
- Totally de-scaled
- Versatile
