  2. As your Corten Steel planter begins to weather, the oily residue will break down.

The Forno Grill  brings your kitchen outside. Prepare healthy meals using the BBQ grill and roasting plate. The round, wide and thick plate varies in temperature, increasing towards the middle, enabling you to manage your cooking requirements. This versatile product allows for a range of different ingredients to be served. The hotplate can be used as a teppanyaki or plancha. Use charcoal to fire your BBQ. Wood can also be used to transform your BBQ into a fire pit. Assure to use well seasoned wood such as Beech, Oak and Berch.  We recommend you do not use resinous wood such as Pine. The Forno Square Grill can be used on every surface through the use of the adjustable solid legs. An air button will control the flow of making, making it adjustable for all your cooking needs. The warm rust colour creates an industrial feel to your garden. Robust and strong, the square shape leaves an lasting impression in your outdoor space. How to use During the first use it is important to make a small fire for the first 25 minutes before increasing it. This will cause the roasting plate to become significantly hotter on the underside. This temperature difference will concave the plate slightly. This process is no long necessary after the first use. After a few uses the oil will have burned into the plate, this is when the BBQ will work best. This will also protect the plate from rusting when the BBQ is not in use. For the best results, use an oil with a high degree of combustion such as sunflower oil. Cleaning is not necessary; the excess oils and food can be scrapped into the fire and a damp cloth can wipe down the roasting plate. After around 25-30 minutes the inside edge of the roasting plate will reach a temperature of 275 – 300°c. Corten Steel (or weathering steel) is an alloy that naturally forms a rust coating the over the first 9 months or so of it being exposed to the weather. Interestingly, due to the composition of this special alloy, this rust coating forms a protective layer they prevents further rusting. The steel underneath remains unimpaired as the outer layer continues to protect and regenerate as it exposed to water and oxygen.

Corten Steel weathering – how it works:
  1. Please Note: Corten products can arrive at any stage of weathering. We cannot guarantee what level they will be or even if multiple items ordered at the same time will all be at the same level. Unweathered areas of your planter will be the colour of freshly manufactured steel, with a dark oily coating.
  2. As your Corten Steel planter begins to weather, the oily residue will break down.
  3. Your planter will begin to change gradually to uniform orange-brown. Please be aware that ‘run-off’ may stain stone or concrete surfaces and bear this in mind when deciding where to place your planter.
  4. After 9 months, your planter should be almost entirely rust-coloured. Please be aware that run-off may still occur for several months after the uniform rust colour has been achieved.

What our customers say about us

What is galvanised sheeting?

Robust, reliable and rust-resistant, our galvanised steel sheet is just the job when weather-proofing is a must. With its tough coating of zinc carbonate, it’s designed to withstand the most extreme of the elements and last for a very long time. From walls to washing machines, the scope for our best-selling metal is endless. We know that everyone’s need for galvanised steel plate is different, which is why we’re happy to cut yours down to the exact size you need. This free service ensures you have exactly what you need for your project, with absolutely nothing going to waste. Plus, there’s no minimum order, meaning no job’s too small. Good for: Car parts, roofs, inner and outer wall sheeting, sheds, construction parts, buckets, planters, wheelbarrows, drainpipes, tubes, sections, machine-building, domestic appliances, electrical goods, agricultural machinery and many more. Galvanised steel’s properties make it tough enough for most exterior projects. Painting: Galvanised steel looks great when it’s coated in colour, but always use specialist primer and paint. How it’s made: Galvanised sheet steel is made when sheet steel is passed through a bath of red-hot, molten zinc. When oxygen reacts with pure zinc, zinc oxide is formed. Zinc oxide reacts with carbon dioxide to form zinc carbonate. It might be dull and grey, but what it lacks in lustre, zinc carbonate more than makes up for in performance. Like an excellent outdoor jacket, zinc carbonate is what protects the steel within from the weather, and the reason why galvanised steel sheets are a proven favourite in the great outdoors. Galvanised steel used to be easily recognisable by its trademark star or spangle pattern, formed on the metal’s surface during the treatment process. As smoother surfaces became more popular, spangles shrunk and, in the case of our steel sheet, they are not visible to the naked eye. If you are looking for metal with the traditional spangle pattern, see our big bright spangled galvanised steel. Benefits:
  • Resistant to rust
  • Versatile
  • Tough coating
  • Great for outdoor projects
Random fact: The process of galvanisation is named after Luigi Galvani, the Italian chemist who discovered electromagnetism in 1781 during an experiment on frogs’ legs.

Our Kick Plates are a piece of metal which you can attach to the foot of a door, it allows the opening of doors using feet or they can also allow for doors to be opened using material handling products like dollies and trolleys. This is important in businesses or institutions where employees do a lot of material handling and protects the door from being marked or damaged. These can also be used in the home. The material absorbs the brunt of the impact which will allow the doors to last much longer. It will also eliminate the need to repair and repaint doors, making the plates cost-effective. They also offer a visual benefit as it can be simple to wipe down a kick plate, while getting a scuff from a door can be a nightmare. Please note holes are not pre-drilled. Why buy from Buy Metal Online?

What our customers say about us

What is mild steel sheet metal?

The term “mild steel” is used to describe low-carbon steel. While mild steel is still strong and tough, it can be further strengthened by the process of carburising – a heat treatment using a source of carbon. The steel is malleable, weldable and ductile, as well as being cost-effective and relatively easy to form. No wonder it's a popular choice in the construction industry.

Where is mild steel used?

Mild steel has many applications that include construction (especially to  meet seismic or wind requirements), machine parts and pipelines. As mild steel is difficult to break and easy to form, it is also used in sculptures and outdoor designs (e.g. fences). To prevent corrosion, it is usually galvanised or painted. You probably use or see mild steel products every day in wires, nails, decorations, and many furniture elements. Even road signs are made of low carbon steel! Because of its high amount of iron and ferrite, this type of steel can be magnetic which makes it the perfect choice to create a magnetic board with.

Our price promise

Buy Metal Online is a reliable stockholder of mild steel sheets at incredibly competitive prices. We are so confident in our mild steel sheet prices that we guarantee you will not find it cheaper! Should you find a mild steel price online in the UK lower on price per unit, we will beat it by 5%. Just let us know which competitor is offering the lower price, and we'll handle the rest. Special offer - 30% discount on all 5mm thickness variants! Corten steel sheet (also known as weathering steel) is instantly identifiable thanks to its rich, bright orange tones. Corten steel plate might look like it’s rusty, but thanks to clever manipulation in its processing, the outer oxidisation actually protects the steel from further corrosion, as well as giving it its striking good looks. The grey metal pictured shows our natural/raw Corten sheet when first purchased, whilst the orange-coloured metal shows how it typically looks like after the weathering process, which takes between 3-10 months of exposure to the elements. If you want your Corten ready-weathered, check out our pre-weathered Corten steel. Thicknesses: 1.5mm, 2mm, 2.5mm, 3mm, 4mm, 5mm, and 6mm. When rust looks good Corten steel sheet (also known as weathering steel) is instantly identifiable thanks to its rich, bright orange tones. Originally developed for building coal carriages in 1930s America, it is now one of the most stylish and durable metals on the market. Corten steel plate might look like it’s rusty, but thanks to clever manipulation in its processing, the outer oxidisation actually protects the steel from further corrosion, as well as making it look very good indeed. There’s no need to paint this one and it just looks better with age, no wonder designers love it. For years, Corten has been the metal of choice for containers and other shipping elements. More recently, though, it’s become the material of choice for many artists, architects and interior designers. We’re proud to supply talented artists and sculptors with Corten for their gorgeous projects, including UK-based Eddie Roberts, who works the metal into stunning creations. As well as art, Corten steel cladding is extremely popular and it is often used for buildings, giving it a tough coating against the elements and an industrial-looking edge. Recently, our weathering steel was used both inside and out for the makeover of The Western, a stylish Brighton bar. We supply our weathering steel panels in a huge variety of thicknesses and sizes and our free cutting service means we can trim it down to the precise size you need, with no minimum order. Just email us for your Corten Steel prices. Whether you’re looking for stunning aesthetics, weather performance or a wonderful mix of both, it delivers. How it’s made: Weathering steel is an alloy, which is what makes it so resistant to the elements. The addition of nickel, copper and chromium at the production stage means that over time, a protective patina will develop on the surface of the metal. Good for: Cladding, containers, marine transportation, bridges, general architecture, interiors, art installations, water features, sculptures, planters and many more. Benefits:
  • Hard-wearing
  • Low maintenance
  • Weatherproof
  • Striking looks
What our customers say about us: “Great value, fast and efficient. We wanted to fabricate Corten steel doors and this company shipped metal really quickly to Northern Scotland, a part of the world which many companies refuse to deliver to. The fact that they will send large sheets of steel here is greatly appreciated. The Corten steel panels cost was also very reasonable. I will definitely not hesitate or shop around next time, I will Buymetalonline.” – Peter Thompson, Trustpilot, December 2015. Random Fact: The most famous Corten steel building is the Barclay Centre in Brooklyn, New York, which is made of 12,000 weathering steel panels.

Magnetic Boards & Magnetic Galvanised Steel Sheet Noticeably useful Our galvanised steel is perfect for notice boards, crafts and DIY projects. This magnetic board comes in a huge range of sizes, as it’s made from galvanised steel, it is equipped to handle all the weather elements making it a great for both indoor and outdoor projects. Thinking of installing a notice board at home or in the office?  Then our galvanised magnetic notice boards are perfect for you. Our customers use these for displaying photographs, children’s artwork, staff notices and important documents.   The sheets are 1.0 mm thick. This product isn’t magnetic itself, so it won’t pick up metal objects, however it is the ideal thickness for both children’s magnets, industrial magnets and anything in between.  Whether you’re looking to keep your bills in order, display your precious photographs or give your living room an industrial edge, the opportunities for magnetic boards are endless. If you can’t see the size you’re looking for in the box above, just let us know; we’re always happy to cut to cut metal to size – and there’s no minimum order, so your magnetic notice board can be delivered just the size you want. How it’s made: Galvanised steel is made when steel is fortified with a powerful layer of zinc. The metal is dipped in an extremely hot bath of molten zinc, which causes a chemical reaction, resulting in a protective layer of zinc which makes the finished product supremely tough. Whilst the zinc that’s added to steel in the galvanisation process is not magnetic, the steel itself is. The amount of zinc used is so little that it doesn’t affect the performance of the steel, meaning magnets will stick to it. Good for: Notice boards, photography displays, shop displays, interiors or anywhere else where a surface that attracts magnets is required. Painting: Galvanised steel can be coated in paint, but make sure you use a specialist product and primer. Benefits:
  • Attracts magnets
  • Huge range of sizes available
  • Free cutting service
  • Sturdy and long-lasting
Please note: We do not offer pre-drilled holes in the corners of the metal What our customers say about us: “Even though the original order arrived damaged the service was fantastic. It was corrected and the new pieces delivered in double quick time. The delivery man was very helpful in moving the heavy pallet for me. I e-mailed a question about the metal galvanisation and I was called back almost instantly with an answer. I was very impressed by the service I received and would fully recommend them.” – Stuart, Trustpilot, December 2015. Random fact: The largest collection of fridge magnets in the world belongs to Louise Greenfarb of Henderson, Las Vegas, United States. She is also known, imaginatively, as ‘Magnet Lady’. Her collection began in the seventies and gradually spread; as well as the hundreds of magnets adorning the front of her fridge, there are novelties and souvenirs on other appliances, doors and all over her home – a grand total of 45,000 magnets.

How will your Corten Steel weather? 1. In most cases your Corten Steel product will arrive un-rusted. It may have a slight patina or dark oily residue, this is completely normal. 2. As weathering begins, the residue breaks down and the rusty colour will start to appear. During this time, any run-off may stain stone or concrete surfaces. 3. After weathering (around 6-9 months), run-off may still occur but it will be minimal.
