Corten steel is beautiful and long-lasting
Corten steel is a lovely material to look at and to touch. It looks weathered, worn and yet is new and very pleasing to the eye. It’s also cost-effective, fully recyclable and designed to last the test of time!
The appearance not only looks fantastic, it also protects the metal. The rust acts as a weather barrier that protects the steel underneath.
That colour develops over time to provide a rich, characterful patina that looks amazing.
That rust layer does produce a runoff. This runoff will fade in time and can be managed by placing the product somewhere where runoff won’t permanently mark.
Corten steel, weathered steel or rusted steel, as it is affectionately known, is made from standard steel with special alloys added to encourage the development of surface rust.
The name is derived from ‘cor’ –rosion resistance and ‘ten’ -sile strength inherent in steel.
The rust develops over time and changes in specific stages into a rich, vibrant colour. That rust is only surface deep and helps protect the product. It does not rust like a car or old garden implement!
Corten steel weathering process
A key characteristic of Corten steel is the weathering. It evolves over time in several distinct stages.
The first stage is fresh steel from the mill with the alloys to help encourage the rust.
The second stage is the initial weathering stage where the alloy begins to break down.
The third stage is where the red rust colour begins to appear in earnest.
The fourth stage is the final weathering stage where the true character of the rusty weathering steel appears.
The main weathering process happens at stage 3 and can last between 3 to 9 months. Buy your Corten steel garden products from Buy Metal Online. Get in touch if you have any questions!
