Cold Reduced Steel Sheet
Buying Options
Hardy, versatile and forever popular, our cold reduced steel sheet is brimming with benefits. Its name comes from the way it is processed down at the steel mill; it is flattened at room temperature, which is positively freezing when compared to the normally-scorching heat used in metal production. Scroll down if you want to find out the science behind this, but all you need to know for now is that the cold-rolling technique produces a steel sheet metal that’s incredibly strong, smooth and slim. Far less ductile than its hot-rolled relative, cold-reduced mild steel sheet makes a brilliant base for enamelling and coating and is a great choice for building, construction and a whole lot more.
We also supply 3000 x 1500mm sheets, please contact us for prices.

Cold Rolled Steel Sheet
Strong Stuff
All our metals come in a huge selection of thicknesses and master sizes and can be trimmed to exactly the size you want, ensuring nothing goes to waste. What’s more, there’s never a minimum order charge, so however much (or little) cold rolled steel sheet you need, we can provide your perfect amount.
Good for: automotive components, body panels, construction parts, building, sections and tubes boilers, drums, bathtubs, radiators, domestic appliances, furniture, organic coating, powder coating, electrical goods and many more.
How it’s made: At the mill, mild steel sheet (sometimes known as carbon steel or plain steel) is passed through two giant cylinders, which flatten it into shape like an enormous pancake. It’s a similar process to the way our hot rolled steel sheet is made, but the difference is in the temperature. Although the word ‘cold’ makes the process sound rather chilly, it actually happens at room temperature. The key is in the fact that the steel is processed when it’s below its recrystallisation temperature; the cold rolled steel sheets come out smoother, thinner, less malleable and very strong.
Benefits:
- Strong
- Smooth
- Thinner
- Versatile

Metal facts:
The tallest building in the world utilises steel in its construction. Located in Dubai, UAE, the Burj Khalifa measures a dizzying 828 metres tall. Surprisingly, because of the tubular technology used, it actually contains half the amount of steel used in the lofty Empire State Building in New York, which measures just over half the Burj Khalifa in height, at 443 metres to its tip. Still, there are 4000 tonnes of steel in Burj Khalifa’s spire alone.

Typical uses include:- • Lawn edging: Create clear, defined lines around turf areas.
- • Borders and beds: Ideal for shaping garden beds, vegetable patches, and herb gardens.
- • Area separation: Use as a border edging to divide sections within a garden.

Installing Your Corten Steel Edging
Installing your Corten steel edging is straightforward and can be adapted to suit different project types, whether you’re working on a garden path, curved lawn border, or raised bed. Installation methods vary depending on your project and tools available:- • Welding or bolting: Join strips together by welding or drilling holes and connecting with metal plates that sit below the finished surface.
- • Pegs: Secure edging in place using Corten pegs or Corten fold-over pegs. As a general guide, we recommend allowing double the number of edging strips plus one peg. Is this Corten steel edging flexible?
Yes, our Corten steel edging is designed to be flexible and adaptable. The strips can be bent manually or with tools to create smooth curves and shapes, making them perfect for circular beds and borders, as well as meandering garden paths and natural garden layouts. The flexibility also allows you to adjust the shape of your edging on-site for a custom fit. What is the difference between galvanised and Corten steel garden edging?
The main difference is the appearance and how they resist corrosion. Galvanised steel edging is coated in zinc, giving it a shiny or matte silver finish and protecting it from rust. In contrast, Corten steel edging is designed to develop a rust patina on its surface. This rust layer is not a flaw – it forms a protective coating that seals the steel underneath from further corrosion. Visually, Corten steel provides a warm, natural red-orange look that evolves over time, making it a popular choice for decorative landscaping. Is this Corten edging suitable for circular beds and borders?
Absolutely. The flexible nature of the steel allows it to be curved and shaped to fit round circular garden beds and borders. It’s ideal for creating flowing shapes, soft edges, and intricate designs that wouldn’t be possible with rigid edging materials. How long will Corten steel edging last?
Corten steel is known for its long-lasting properties. With minimal maintenance, it can last 25 years or more, depending on environmental conditions. Once the protective rust layer has formed, the steel underneath is sealed off from moisture and air, preventing corrosion and ensuring long-term durability even in wet climates. What width/height should I choose?
Our Corten steel edging comes in three different widths: 100mm, 150mm, and 290mm. The right height depends on your intended use. For lawn edging or flower beds, 100mm or 150mm is typically sufficient. For raised beds, pathways, or areas with loose gravel or soil, the deeper 290mm option provides greater containment and structural support. What thickness should I use?
We offer Corten edging in 1.5mm, 2mm, and 3mm thicknesses. For most standard garden applications, 1.5mm or 2mm is perfectly suitable. If your edging will be exposed to vehicle traffic, such as along a driveway, or will support heavy materials, 3mm thickness is recommended for added strength and durability. Can you cut Corten steel edging strips?
Yes, Corten steel can be cut using appropriate metal cutting tools, such as a grinder or hacksaw. However, it’s often easier to overlap any excess material behind the start point for a tidy finish. Don’t forget, we offer a free cutting service, so your edging arrives ready to install with no extra work required. We also offer a wide range of lengths and widths to suit most garden layouts. How do I install Corten steel edging?
There are several ways to install your edging depending on your preferences and tools. The strips can be welded together for a seamless connection, or you can drill holes and use joining plates that sit below the soil level. For a quicker installation, use our fold-over Corten pegs to secure the edging in place – just ensure your peg is twice the height of your edging for stability. We recommend using four pegs for the first strip of edging, then three pegs per additional length of edging laid. We also supply corner pieces to create right angles more easily. What does Corten steel edging look like?
Corten steel arrives as a plain, silver-grey metal, but when exposed to the elements, it begins to oxidise and form a rust-coloured patina. This transformation typically takes 6 to 9 months, depending on weather conditions. The final appearance is a rich, reddish-brown finish that gives your garden an attractive, natural look. If you'd prefer your edging to arrive pre-weathered, contact our sales team for more information. What is Corten steel?
Corten steel comes from ‘cor’ –rosion resistance and ‘ten’ -sile strength inherent in steel. Corten steel is a high-strength, weathering steel alloy designed to resist atmospheric corrosion. It develops a stable, self-protecting rust layer on the surface that acts as a barrier to prevent further corrosion to the steel underneath. That rust does not damage the product in any way, but instead protects it from the elements. This makes it a durable, low-maintenance alternative to traditional mild steel. The coating on the steel ages over time and exposure to the elements. It takes around a year to fully develop and will produce runoff when you first install it. Please note this runoff can stain, so be mindful of where you install the Corten steel edging. Once the Corten steel has been outside for a few months, that runoff should stop and you should have a beautiful rust-coloured border.Corten Steel Edging

What is Plastisol?
Plastisol is a type of PVC paint coating that dries to form a tough, durable finish. This coating is known for its resistance to corrosion, abrasion, and weather damage, making it ideal for both interior and exterior applications. How is PVC Plastisol-Coated Steel Made?
First, the steel sheet is bathed in a hot bath of zinc, which toughens it against moisture and the elements. This galvanising process is what produces galvanised steel. Next, the 200-micron PVC paint, Plastisol, is applied to the metal’s surface in its liquid form. To finish, the Plastisol outer layer is embossed with a leather-grain pattern. The outer plastic coating combined with the galvanisation produces a material that is equipped to resist the elements and any resulting corrosion.Order PVC Plastisol-Coated Steel from Buy Metal Online
