What our customers say about us

Practical uses:

Galvanised steel is a versatile material with a wide range of applications, showcasing its durability and adaptability in numerous industries. From automotive components to roofing, inner and outer wall sheeting, sheds, and construction parts, galvanised steel proves its qualities.

It also finds utility in making sturdy buckets, planters, wheelbarrows, and drainpipes, while its use extends to tubes, sections, and machine-building applications. The material’s resilience makes it a preferred choice for domestic appliances, electrical goods, and agricultural machinery as well, demonstrating its ability to withstand the demands of both indoor and outdoor environments.

It can also be painted to give it colour, but preparation is key and a specialist primer and metal paint should be used when doing so.

How it’s made

The production process involves passing sheet steel through a bath of red-hot, molten zinc. This results in the formation of zinc oxide when oxygen reacts with pure zinc. The zinc oxide then reacts with carbon dioxide to produce zinc carbonate. This newly formed coating serves as the protective layer, shielding the steel from the weather.

In the past, galvanised steel could be recognised by its distinctive star or spangle pattern, a result of the treatment process on the metal’s surface.

As contemporary tastes lean towards smoother surfaces over the years, the spangles have become invisible to the naked eye on our galvanised steel sheets. However, we recommend taking a look at our spangled galvanised steel if you’re looking for metal with the traditional sparkling snowflake pattern.

Random fact:

The process of galvanisation is named after Luigi Galvani, the Italian chemist who discovered electromagnetism in 1781 during an experiment on frogs’ legs.

Galvanised Steel Kick Plates

View Details Select options
Metal kick plates from Buy Metal Online are designed to protect doors in high-traffic areas. They provide a tough, resistant surface where feet, trolleys, dollies and carts can open doors without marking or damaging them. Metal kick plates attach to the bottom of doors, where you would kick, push or bang a door open when you’re working quickly or carrying loads. It’s a small but important way to protect the building and its doors from damage.

Key qualities of metal kick plates

Metal kick plates are manufactured to a high standard from a range of different metals including aluminium and steel. Our metal kick plates are strong and durable with key qualities including:
  1. Protection: Metal kick plates are affixed to the bottom of any door to protect it from impact. Ideal in warehouses, factories, schools, hospitals and anywhere doors often get marked or damaged.

  2. Flexible: Metal kick plates can be cut to any size or shape and be used for protective or decorative purposes.

  3. Low maintenance: Screw or glue in place, keep clean and easily wipe off or polish out any marks or scratches. They are simple and very low maintenance.

  4. Cost-effective: Make doors last longer with a simple metal sheet and keep them looking good at the same time.

How to use metal kick plates

Metal kick plates can be attached to the bottom of a door to enable hands-free opening with feet or allow doors to be opened with material handling equipment like dollies and trolleys. These are ideal for businesses or institutions where doors tend to get marked or damaged. They are also suitable for use in the home. The metal plates absorb the brunt of the impact, extending the lifespan of your doors and reducing the need for repairs or repainting. These kick plates are also easy to clean compared to challenging scuffs, scratches or dents in doors. All you need to do is prepare the surface of the door, drill holes in the kick plate where required and screw it into place. You can also bond them onto the door with a strong adhesive if you prefer.

What our customers say about us

What is spangled galvanised steel?

Spangled galvanised steel is a standard galvanised steel sheet with a little extra something special. It has all the same qualities as galvanised steel but has a sparkling snowflake pattern within the finish. Spangled galvanised steel takes a very ordinary building material and adds a little decorative zing. It still has all the qualities you look for but with more aesthetic interest. Galvanised steel is popular thanks to its ability to resist weather, the environment, chemicals, stains, rust and impact. It’s a simple material used throughout the building industry and in manufacturing to deliver longevity and reliability. Contact our team if you need something bespoke.

What is spangled galvanised steel used for?

Spangled galvanised steel is a standard galvanised steel sheet with a little sparkle. It can perform any role standard galvanised steel can. Those roles include being used extensively in building. It can be used to build steel frames, balconies, staircases, ladders, walkways, drainpipes, planters, ducting, fixtures and fittings and a whole lot more. Galvanised steel is also used in vehicle manufacture, household appliances, electrical goods, wheelbarrows and anything that requires a tough material able to survive constant use unscathed. Even though spangled steel looks great on its own, you can still paint it in the same way you can with standard galvanised steel. Use a suitable primer and paint and you’re good to go!

How is spangled galvanised steel made?

Spangled galvanised steel is created using standard steel sheet that’s passed through molten zinc. When exposed to oxygen, zinc oxide is formed. This, in turn, reacts with carbon dioxide in the air to form zinc carbonate. The spangles form naturally as the zinc cools and forms crystals that look like snowflakes. The composition of those spangles depends on how the steel is cooled so we can control the size and density of the spangle effect.

Benefits of spangled galvanised steel

Galvanised steel has many benefits, including:
  • Corrosion resistance
  • Resistant to the elements
  • Flexible as a building material
  • Ideal for outdoor use
  • Sustainable and long-lasting
  • Predictable when used in building

Random fact about spangled galvanised steel

Galvanised steel is unusual in that it offers three layers of protection when used.
  1. The steel provides a metallurgically bonded physical barrier against corrosion and the elements
  2. The zinc coating is a sacrificial barrier designed to maintain the steel underneath for longer by gradually degrading so it protects the steel
  3. The tight bond between the steel and zinc protects the metal from just about any chemical or corrosion, including sideways creep
Spangled galvanised metal is available in sheet form and can be made to order. Contact Buy Metal Online to discuss or order online for fast delivery to your door.
