Important Notes

After accelerating the natural ageing and antiquing process of our copper sheets we typically finish our work using a gloss lacquer. Not only does this create a brilliant finish but it prevents further ageing of the metal therefore preserving the look and design created. Should the lacquer come off through cleaning, washing, excess heat etc the patina will change and continue to develop. As ‘live’ metals, direct contact with acidic liquids like vinegar, sauce, and fruit juices, will accelerate this reaction and the look of the product will change. Our gloss lacquered products are ideal when used for decorative and design purposes. In working environments - where contact, usage, and cleaning requirements are high - there is a probability that the gloss lacquer applied will wear off and the product will continue to change from its original look. As such our lacquered products may not be suitable for splashbacks that are exposed to high temperatures and/or steam. Should you require an aged copper product for a heavy usage purpose please contact our team to discuss the best options for you.

Caring for your aged copper

Cleaning: On lacquered finished products use warm soapy water only with microfibre cloths. Do not use acidic or alkaline based products. Heat: Always use mats when setting down hot plates and cups. Spills: Clean up all spills immediately with warm and soapy water. Acidic or Akaline spills may affect the patina. Ferrous metals: some of these can cause a reaction on copper. Please avoid direct contact with items such as some candle sticks and cast iron pans etc.

* Note on Lacquered products

Lacquer is essentially a coating of paint and should be treated and cleaned as such. Do not use harsh abrasive cleaning items as this with wear away the lacquer and chase the metal to continue to age and change. For heavy use products such as bar and table tops, always:
  • 1. Clean gently with warm and soapy water
  • 2. Use heat mats when required
  • 3. Avoid scratching
  • 4. Clean spills immediately
  • 5. Re-lacquer if required

What is Brushed Copper? A Vibrant and Matte Interior Finish Metal doesn't always have to be smooth and gleaming, as our specialist brushed copper sheets prove. If you shy away from the shiny and prefer your metal more muted, these hand-rendered sheets could be just what you're looking for. Not only do they attract fewer fingerprints and are therefore far easier to maintain than shinier metals, they look good too. The textured finish is duller than our regular copper sheets, making these sheets the perfect choice for those seeking a less polished (but still stylish) surface. We seal the brushed sheets with a crystalline wax to preserve the finish for years to come. It's up to you how you use your brushed copper, but our customers particularly love to include this rich, distinctive metal in kitchens and bathrooms for features such as splashbacks and wall coverings. The unique, vibrant colour of copper brings warmth and a vintage aesthetic to any room, whilst the brushed finish gives it a contemporary (and easy to care for) edge. At Buy Metal Online, we're proud of our free cutting service, which allows you to order exactly the amount of sheet metal you need. Plus there’s no minimum order, so we can supply you with as much or as little brushed copper as you need. Good for: Interior design, counter-tops, splashbacks, wall coverings, bar-tops, panels, art features and more. How it's made: Copper ore-containing minerals are mined from the ground before undergoing extensive treatment to extract the metal. First, the rocks are milled to remove any excess, non-copper materials. but the resulting product still contains other elements such as sulphur and iron. In order to remove these, a process called smelting, involving two very hot furnaces, needs to take place. The result is the 'copper blister', which contains 99% pure copper, and still needs to be further refined,. After another furnace and an electrorefining process, the pure copper is cast into ingots or rods. In order to create sheet copper, these bulkier pieces are rolled out until they're flat. Finally, we hand-brush the surface of the metal to give it that matte finish, then seal the deal with a layer of protective crystalline wax. Benefits: Easy to maintain Striking colour Contemporary matte finish Malleable and versatile What our customers say about us: “Great service, and if you have a query they just ring and you even get a named person to talk to at the other end, how rare is that?!” - Gordon R, Trustpilot review, August 2020. Random fact: Copper was the first metal to be worked and utilised by human beings, with the first use being approximately 10,000 years ago. A copper pendant found in Iraq was estimated to be from around 8700BC. For many thousands of years, human beings believed that copper was the only metal; this and its malleability meant it was used for all kinds of purposes, from art and jewellery through to weapons. What is copper metal sheet?

The conductor Instantly recognisable by its unique, orangey hue, copper sheet is a distinctive, malleable metal that’s up to hundreds of jobs. One of the basic chemical elements (CU in case you’ve forgotten your Periodic Table), it’s been popular for millennia. Our copper sheet plate comes in a range of thicknesses and we can cut it to size, supplying you with just the amount you need. Traditionally, copper’s long list of pluses have made it a firm favourite in industry and construction: after all, it’s soft, brilliant at conducting heat and electricity, resistant to corrosion, and even has antibacterial properties. More recently, though, the metal has come into high demand by architects and interior designers simply because it looks great. Whether you’re looking for form of function, there are limitless uses for copper sheet. UK based, we supply sheet metal to clients all over the country. When you buy copper sheet from us, there’s no minimum order. Just select the amount you need from the box above, or call us to take advantage of our free cutting service. How is it made? Copper ore is mined from deep underground, then taken away to be cleaned, crushed and milled. It then undergoes several chemical processes and put into an electro-refining tank for purification, before it is eventually melted down and cast into ingots, rods, or cakes. To make copper sheet, these chunks of copper are then rolled out flat. Benefits
  • Malleable
  • Conducts heat
  • Conducts electricity
  • Aesthetically stylish
Random fact: Apart from gold, copper is the only metal on the Periodic Table that isn’t silver or grey in colour.

Stylish and modern, copper splashbacks and worktops have become a huge trend in interior design. Not only do copper splashbacks add designer chic in both large and small kitchens, this interior statement ages gracefully and is also easy to maintain. Lead time for lacquering can be up to 10 working days from order. Is copper a good choice for the kitchen? Copper splashbacks are easy to maintain and get even more beautiful with age as their colour develops in the oxidation process. Ideally polished or covered with its rustic, green patina, copper works perfectly with any design style. With its orange hue, allowing light to bounce beautifully and warm up contemporary designs, copper splashbacks are a great choice to enrich modern and sleek kitchens. This timeless metal looks stunning in more traditional or rustic settings, as well as industrial interiors. Copper not only looks great but also has properties that make it the metal of choice for kitchen surfaces. Copper, as well as its alloys such as brass and bronze, is a natural antimicrobial material. This means that copper resists microbes even better than the kitchen favourite stainless steel! Research shows that even the nastiest of bacteria, such as E. coli, is rapidly and almost completely killed when it comes into contact with copper. What our customers say about us: Care instructions for copper splashbacks or copper worktops Copper worktops and splashbacks should be cleaned with water and a mild detergent (such as washing-up liquid or mild soap). For the best results use specific copper cleaning products and avoid using bleach (which you won't need anyway because of copper's antimicrobial properties). Copper does not like acids or salt, so if a spillage occurs, rinse immediately with fresh water and then dry with a soft cloth.
