Corten steel sheet (also known as weathering steel) is instantly identifiable thanks to its rich, bright orange tones. Originally developed for building coal carriages in 1930s America, it is now one of the most stylish and durable metals on the market. Corten steel plate might look like it’s rusty, but thanks to clever manipulation in its processing, the outer oxidisation actually protects the steel from further corrosion, as well as giving it its striking good looks.
The grey metal pictured shows our natural/raw Corten sheet when first purchased, whilst the orange-coloured metal shows how it typically looks like after the weathering process, which takes between 3-10 months of exposure to the elements.
If you want your Corten ready-weathered, check out our pre-weathered Corten steel.
Thicknesses: 1.5mm, 2mm, 2.5mm, 3mm, 4mm, 5mm, and 6mm.
When rust looks good
Corten steel sheet (also known as weathering steel) is instantly identifiable thanks to its rich, bright orange tones. Originally developed for building coal carriages in 1930s America, it is now one of the most stylish and durable metals on the market. Corten steel plate might look like it’s rusty, but thanks to clever manipulation in its processing, the outer oxidisation actually protects the steel from further corrosion, as well as making it look very good indeed. There’s no need to paint this one and it just looks better with age, no wonder designers love it. For years, Corten has been the metal of choice for containers and other shipping elements. More recently, though, it’s become the material of choice for many artists, architects and interior designers. We’re proud to supply talented artists and sculptors with Corten for their gorgeous projects, including UK-based Eddie Roberts, who works the metal into stunning creations. As well as art, Corten steel cladding is extremely popular and it is often used for buildings, giving it a tough coating against the elements and an industrial-looking edge. Recently, our weathering steel was used both inside and out for the makeover of The Western, a stylish Brighton bar. We supply our weathering steel panels in a huge variety of thicknesses and sizes and our free cutting service means we can trim it down to the precise size you need, with no minimum order. Just email us for your Corten Steel prices. Whether you’re looking for stunning aesthetics, weather performance or a wonderful mix of both, it delivers.
How it’s made:
Weathering steel is an alloy, which is what makes it so resistant to the elements. The addition of nickel, copper and chromium at the production stage means that over time, a protective patina will develop on the surface of the metal.
Good for:
Cladding, containers, marine transportation, bridges, general architecture, interiors, art installations, water features, sculptures, planters and many more.
Benefits:
- Hard-wearing
- Low maintenance
- Weatherproof
- Striking looks

Weathered Corten
Corten steel is also known as weathering steel, or COR-TEN steel. It is specially formulated to provide the strength and stability of traditional steel with an attractive patina. A thin layer of oxide forms on the outside surface of the steel, giving it that attractive burnt orange colour of rust. This layer is thin and does not affect the material’s strength or longevity which is why it is so popular. In fact, that oxidised layer helps to protect the material from the elements and negates the need for finishing, which is why it was invented in the first place! Buy Metal Online sells top grade pre-weathered Corten steel sheet in various thicknesses and sizes. We can cut the sheet into custom size if required. Select the next size up from your required dimensions and request custom cutting on the order form. We will take care of the rest! How is Corten Steel Manufactured?
Corten steel is manufactured in a foundry, rolled into sheets and cut to size. It is then coated with a special oil mixture that helps create the oxidisation. The oil naturally dries and breaks down, turning to rust. This process can take anywhere between 3 to 10 months and will gradually deepen in colour and character.Benefits of Rusted Corten Steel
The advantage of buying weathered Corten steel is that you don’t need to wait for 3 - 10 months to enjoy the amazing colour and texture of Corten. This is especially relevant if you are planning on using Corten for interior decorating.Common Uses
Corten steel is a flexible architectural material that works exceptionally well in many situations. Prime examples of where Corten steel shines is in building facades, architectural installations, garden pieces, public monuments, sculptures or civil engineering projects. Many gardens feature Corten steel, it provides a rustic look that appears completely natural, fitting into a garden theme perfectly. Corten steel can be used as:- Coverings or facades for buildings.
- Roofs and decorative features.
- Garden ornaments or installations.
- Larger engineering projects.

Our shark galvanised steel garden edging is designed to help you change the look of your outdoor space simply and swiftly. Made from our best-selling and ultra-durable galvanised steel, this spiked metal bordering is ready for anything the British weather throws at it.
We cut a triangular sharks' tooth pattern into our regular edging, so all that's left for you to do is sink it into the ground. This eliminates the need to weld pegs to the steel strips and makes installation easier than ever.
Galvanised steel has a dull, silver-grey finish, giving it a sleek, minimalist look. As well as creating neat, raised beds with an industrial aesthetic, this products helps keep rodents and other pests away from your plants. It's flexible and comes in a wide range of heights and lengths, so you can achieve the precise design you're looking for. Feeling inspired? Check out our full range of galvanised steel garden products.
Good for:
Lawns, flower beds, gardens, yards, allotments, courtyards, borders, rockeries, raised beds, vegetable growing, herb gardens.
How it's made:
Sheet steel is dipped in a bath of pure molten zinc, forming zinc oxide. When zinc oxide reacts with carbon dioxide, zinc carbonate is formed. Zinc carbonate is the stuff that protects the steel from the elements, making it exceptionally water and weatherproof, so you don 't have to worry about rust. We cut the metal into strips to suit the height you're looking for, then cut a spiked pattern into one edge to make installation straightforward.
We would suggest you re-galvanise the galvanised edging sides, where it has been cut, to make sure it is weather resistant, before you install. You can buy galvanised spray and seek further advise from your local DIY store

What our customers say about us
Practical uses:
Galvanised steel is a versatile material with a wide range of applications, showcasing its durability and adaptability in numerous industries. From automotive components to roofing, inner and outer wall sheeting, sheds, and construction parts, galvanised steel proves its qualities. It also finds utility in making sturdy buckets, planters, wheelbarrows, and drainpipes, while its use extends to tubes, sections, and machine-building applications. The material's resilience makes it a preferred choice for domestic appliances, electrical goods, and agricultural machinery as well, demonstrating its ability to withstand the demands of both indoor and outdoor environments. It can also be painted to give it colour, but preparation is key and a specialist primer and metal paint should be used when doing so.How it's made
The production process involves passing sheet steel through a bath of red-hot, molten zinc. This results in the formation of zinc oxide when oxygen reacts with pure zinc. The zinc oxide then reacts with carbon dioxide to produce zinc carbonate. This newly formed coating serves as the protective layer, shielding the steel from the weather. In the past, galvanised steel could be recognised by its distinctive star or spangle pattern, a result of the treatment process on the metal's surface. As contemporary tastes lean towards smoother surfaces over the years, the spangles have become invisible to the naked eye on our galvanised steel sheets. However, we recommend taking a look at our spangled galvanised steel if you’re looking for metal with the traditional sparkling snowflake pattern. Random fact: The process of galvanisation is named after Luigi Galvani, the Italian chemist who discovered electromagnetism in 1781 during an experiment on frogs’ legs. Our service
We understand that every project is unique. That’s why we offer a free cutting service to cut your galvanised steel sheets to the exact size you need, with no wastage. What our customers say about us
What is spangled galvanised steel?
Spangled galvanised steel is a standard galvanised steel sheet with a little extra something special. It has all the same qualities as galvanised steel but has a sparkling snowflake pattern within the finish. Spangled galvanised steel takes a very ordinary building material and adds a little decorative zing. It still has all the qualities you look for but with more aesthetic interest. Galvanised steel is popular thanks to its ability to resist weather, the environment, chemicals, stains, rust and impact. It’s a simple material used throughout the building industry and in manufacturing to deliver longevity and reliability. Contact our team if you need something bespoke. What is spangled galvanised steel used for?
Spangled galvanised steel is a standard galvanised steel sheet with a little sparkle. It can perform any role standard galvanised steel can. Those roles include being used extensively in building. It can be used to build steel frames, balconies, staircases, ladders, walkways, drainpipes, planters, ducting, fixtures and fittings and a whole lot more. Galvanised steel is also used in vehicle manufacture, household appliances, electrical goods, wheelbarrows and anything that requires a tough material able to survive constant use unscathed. Even though spangled steel looks great on its own, you can still paint it in the same way you can with standard galvanised steel. Use a suitable primer and paint and you’re good to go!How is spangled galvanised steel made?
Spangled galvanised steel is created using standard steel sheet that’s passed through molten zinc. When exposed to oxygen, zinc oxide is formed. This, in turn, reacts with carbon dioxide in the air to form zinc carbonate. The spangles form naturally as the zinc cools and forms crystals that look like snowflakes. The composition of those spangles depends on how the steel is cooled so we can control the size and density of the spangle effect.Benefits of spangled galvanised steel
Galvanised steel has many benefits, including:- Corrosion resistance
- Resistant to the elements
- Flexible as a building material
- Ideal for outdoor use
- Sustainable and long-lasting
- Predictable when used in building
Random fact about spangled galvanised steel
Galvanised steel is unusual in that it offers three layers of protection when used.- The steel provides a metallurgically bonded physical barrier against corrosion and the elements
- The zinc coating is a sacrificial barrier designed to maintain the steel underneath for longer by gradually degrading so it protects the steel
- The tight bond between the steel and zinc protects the metal from just about any chemical or corrosion, including sideways creep

Pickled and Oiled Hot Rolled Steel Sheets
The smoother steel
Rolling, pickling and oiling might all sound like they’re something to do with food, but before you get hungry, remember that this is a metal website and in this case we’re talking about steel (sorry!) When metal goes through any hot process, it can be left with a residue or scaling on its surface, which, when exposed to moisture, can turn to rust. This can be avoided by giving the steel a treatment to which smoothes things over, called pickling. Afterwards, the material is rinsed before a protective layer of oil blocks out the elements and gives this metal its flawless looks and strong performance. It’s perfect if your project requires a metal with a totally blemish-free surface: think painting, powder-coating and furnishings. As with all our products, hot rolled pickled and oiled steel sheet (also known as oiled steel sheet and pickled steel sheet) can be trimmed to the precise size you need, with no minimum order. Our hot rolled steel prices are highly competitive; just select what you need in the boxes above, or call us to take advantage of our free cutting service.
Good for: Radiators, metal furniture, domestic appliances, powder-coating, painting ...this oiled steel is perfect for any other situation in which a smooth surface is paramount.
How it’s made:
The process of making hot rolled steel leads to oxidisation, meaning a layer of scale, impurities and debris can be left behind. In order to prevent rust from forming on the surface of the metal when it is exposed to the air, this scale needs to go. Pickling takes care of this: by dipping the steel sheet into exactly the right acid, the oxide is dissolved and the metal is de-scaled. The ‘scale jacket’ that’s removed is a very thin layer, usually a tiny fraction of a centimetre thick, but it makes all the difference to the finished product’s appearance: metal with scale has a grey, dull appearance, whereas that which has been pickled comes out with a gleaming sheen. Once the scale is gone, pickled steel is rinsed, before being given an extra layer of protection from the elements in the form of an oil barrier.
Benefits:
- Ultra-smooth surface
- Protection from the elements
- Totally de-scaled
- Versatile

Brilliantly Versatile
Looking for a metal that’s easy to shape? This is the one. A big favourite with blacksmiths, our hot rolled mild steel sheet is ideal for when pliability is key. Of course, in its normal state, it's strong stuff, but the process used to form it means it becomes more malleable when hot, making it perfect for forging. At the steel mill, ultra-heated carbon steel (often known as plain or mild steel) is passed through two heavy duty rollers, which flatten it into sheets. Imagine dough being squeezed through two giant rolling pins and you’ve got the right idea. The finished product is a ductile yet sturdy metal that’s up to countless jobs. Just like our other products, our hot rolled steel sheet comes in a wide variety of thicknesses and sizes to suit your project. There’s no minimum order and we can cut master sizes down to precisely the dimensions you need, so that nothing goes to waste.
Good for: Construction, automotive parts, agricultural equipment, energy provision, industry strip, lifting, blacksmithing, manufacturing, excavating, pipes, railway and train carriage components and more.
How it's made: Ingots or slabs of steel are heated to almost 1000ºC (this scorching heat ensures it's over the all-important recrystallisation temperature) before being passed through twin heavy rollers in the steel mill. When the metal is as hot as this, it can be easily manipulated into the shape and size required. One of the reasons why hot rolled steel is in demand is that it can be made quickly and in larger sized sheets than other metals. As long as the temperature of the metal at the time of rolling is above its recrystallisation temperature, it is classed as hot rolling (when the process happens at room temperature, it’s called cold rolling or cold reducing, and the finished product is less malleable.) Hot rolled steel is often pickled after the rolling process to remove any surface scale; see our hot rolled pickled and oiled steel sheet if you’re looking for hot rolled plate with a smoother finish.
Benefits:
- Malleable
- Versatile
- Affordable
- Reliable

A dream for welding and painting
Iron Zinc (IZ), gets its name from the iron zinc alloy it is coated with. Even though it has the same centre as galvanised, the different coating gives it a whole new bunch of properties and allows it to be specialised for different applications. IZ or galvanneal as it is sometimes referred to, provides a matte and consistent grey coloured finish and is more brittle and harder than galvanised. Its welding, bending and forming ability make it a favourite within the car and door manufacturing industries, and it's also loved for being an excellent, scratch-resistant base for paint. The IZ coating, also known as a galvannealled coating, is different to others because of its 10% iron content. That little iron content increases its resistance to corrosion and combats corrosion of the steel underneath, making the entire sheet last even longer than standard galvanised steel. Don’t forget we also cut to any size, so whatever size you require, we’ve got it covered.
Good for:
Creating high quality painted products, car parts, spot welding, welding, forming, security doors and many more. Thanks to its welding and painting properties, iron zinc’s most common usage is for car parts.
How it’s Made:
IZ (Iron Zinc) is created when steel is immersed in a bath full of zinc until an alloy coating between the zinc and steel forms. After being removed from the bath, gas knives are used to wipe away the excess coating, and this is how different thicknesses are made; the coating is wiped down until the required thickness is met. Once coated in molten zinc and at the right thickness, the steel is taken to a furnace, heated between 1000-1500°F, and kept there until the molten zinc becomes fully alloyed with the iron from the steel. The outcome is the extremely tough IZ steel, coated with an alloy of zinc and 10% iron.
