Corten Steel weathering – how it works:
- Please Note: Corten products can arrive at any stage of weathering. We cannot guarantee what level they will be or even if multiple items ordered at the same time will all be at the same level. Unweathered areas of your planter will be the colour of freshly manufactured steel, with a dark oily coating.
- As your Corten Steel planter begins to weather, the oily residue will break down.
- Your planter will begin to change gradually to uniform orange-brown. Please be aware that ‘run-off’ may stain stone or concrete surfaces and bear this in mind when deciding where to place your planter.
- After 9 months, your planter should be almost entirely rust-coloured. Please be aware that run-off may still occur for several months after the uniform rust colour has been achieved.

What is Corten steel?
Corten steel, also known as weathering steel, is a high-strength alloy made primarily from iron, with added copper, chromium, and nickel. Our Jumeirah Corten steel ponds are crafted from premium industrial-grade Corten steel sheets, designed to deliver superior strength and long-lasting durability. This material begins its life as a blue-grey colour, gradually developing a bright orange-brown patina as it weathers. Although it may look like rust, this oxidised layer is a natural protective coating that prevents further corrosion and gives the pond a striking, industrial aesthetic that evolves beautifully over time. How will my Corten steel pond weather?
Your Corten steel pond will typically arrive in a raw, blue-grey state and will gradually change to a textured burnt-orange hue as it weathers with exposure to the elements. The speed of this process depends on the climate, but most items are fully weathered within 9 months. Here’s what to expect:- In most cases, your Corten steel pond will arrive un-rusted. It may have a slight patina or dark oily residue, which is completely normal.
- As weathering begins, the residue breaks down and the rusty colour will gradually start to appear. During this time, any run-off may stain stone or concrete surfaces, so choose your pond’s position with care.
- After weathering (around 6-9 months), your metal pond should be almost entirely rust-coloured. Run-off may still occur but it will be minimal.
Can Corten steel be used as a pond?
Yes. When properly lined, Corten steel is a fantastic material for ponds. It offers both durability and aesthetics, making it a practical yet stylish choice for any garden. To ensure the Corten steel weathers properly and to prevent residue, we recommend using a neutralising water supplement if your pond water isn't pH neutral. Regularly check your water's pH levels to maintain the steel's appearance and weathering process. Is Corten steel safe for fish?
Yes, our Jumeirah Corten steel pond is fully lined with a polyurea waterproof barrier that prevents any direct contact between the steel and water. This non-toxic coating makes it safe for fish and other aquatic life, as well as plants and garden wildlife. How do you waterproof Corten steel?
Our Corten ponds are fully lined with polyurea, which is sprayed on the inside and allowed to set. This is a professional-grade coating that creates a waterproof barrier to ensure a watertight, secure interior that’s also non-toxic and safe for animals and plants. That means there’s no need for additional waterproof treatments, sealing or pond liners. On the outside, Corten steel is naturally weatherproof and resistant to rain, frost, and the elements, offering a long-lasting and low-maintenance finish that evolves beautifully over time.Do you need to seal Corten steel?
No sealing is required on our Jumeirah Corten steel pond. The outer surface develops its own protective layer as it rusts, while the interior polyurea coating keeps the water securely contained. Can Corten steel hold water?
Absolutely. When lined with the proper coating, Corten steel holds water effectively, making it an ideal material for stylish and secure garden ponds. Our Corten steel pond containers are built for purpose and are fully waterproof and watertight for your peace of mind. How do I make a Corten steel container pond?
Start with a high-quality, fully lined and waterproof Corten steel pond container like the Jumeirah. Choose a level, sunny location that receives plenty of natural light, ideally away from overhanging trees to reduce falling debris. Begin by adding a base layer of clean gravel or pond substrate to support aquatic plants and provide a natural environment for fish and other wildlife. Next, arrange a variety of aquatic plants such as oxygenators, floaters, and marginals to promote water clarity, oxygenation, and visual interest. If you plan to add fish, ensure the water is conditioned properly and introduce them gradually. To elevate the design, consider incorporating solar-powered fountains, LED lighting, or decorative water features that complement the pond’s industrial yet natural aesthetic. Regular maintenance, such as topping up water levels, removing excess algae, and cleaning filters (if used), will help keep your Corten steel pond looking beautiful and functioning perfectly all year round. How do I keep Corten steel pond water clear?
You can use pond filters, aquatic plants, and regular maintenance to keep your water clear. Skim debris regularly and test water quality if housing fish.Does Corten steel leach into water?
Our Corten steel pond containers are fully lined with a professional-grade, non-toxic polyurea coating that creates a completely waterproof and watertight barrier. This means there's no risk of leaching into the water, making them completely safe for fish, aquatic plants, and other wildlife. However, other unlined Corten ponds on the market can pose this risk, and may leach into water over time.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]Jumeirah Corten Steel Pond

- • Lawn edging: Create clear, defined lines around turf areas.
- • Borders and beds: Ideal for shaping garden beds, vegetable patches, and herb gardens.
- • Area separation: Use as a border edging to divide sections within a garden.
- • Driveways and gravel paths: Maintain shape and prevent movement of materials.
- • Courtyards and rockeries: Add structure and contrast.
- • Raised beds: A perfect edging system for keeping soil and mulch in place.
Corten edging is both functional and decorative, offering a solution for everything from simple garden borders to complex landscaping designs.
Installing Your Corten Steel Edging
Installing your Corten steel edging is straightforward and can be adapted to suit different project types, whether you’re working on a garden path, curved lawn border, or raised bed. Installation methods vary depending on your project and tools available:
- • Welding or bolting: Join strips together by welding or drilling holes and connecting with metal plates that sit below the finished surface.
- • Pegs: Secure edging in place using Corten pegs or Corten fold-over pegs. For a secure fit, especially in softer ground conditions, we recommend 4 pegs for the first strip of edging, then 3 pegs per additional length of edging laid.
Our fold-over pegs are easy to install – just double your edging height to pick the right size peg. You can also use our Corten edging corner pieces to achieve clean 90-degree angles with ease. We recommend using 2 corner pieces per corner.
If you need to shape your edging around curved beds or borders, the flexibility of our Corten steel edging makes it easy to bend the strips by hand or with the help of basic tools. This allows for clean, sweeping lines that flow naturally within your garden design.
For even quicker installation, particularly in harder ground or for larger areas, take a look at our Shark Edging or Interlocking Shark Edging options which are designed for simplicity, speed, and strength.

What our customers say about us:
Corten Steel Edging FAQs
Is this Corten steel edging flexible?
Yes, our Corten steel edging is designed to be flexible and adaptable. The strips can be bent manually or with tools to create smooth curves and shapes, making them perfect for circular beds and borders, as well as meandering garden paths and natural garden layouts. The flexibility also allows you to adjust the shape of your edging on-site for a custom fit.
What is the difference between galvanised and Corten steel garden edging?
The main difference is the appearance and how they resist corrosion. Galvanised steel edging is coated in zinc, giving it a shiny or matte silver finish and protecting it from rust. In contrast, Corten steel edging is designed to develop a rust patina on its surface. This rust layer is not a flaw – it forms a protective coating that seals the steel underneath from further corrosion. Visually, Corten steel provides a warm, natural red-orange look that evolves over time, making it a popular choice for decorative landscaping.
Is this Corten edging suitable for circular beds and borders?
Absolutely. The flexible nature of the steel allows it to be curved and shaped to fit round circular garden beds and borders. It’s ideal for creating flowing shapes, soft edges, and intricate designs that wouldn’t be possible with rigid edging materials.
How long will Corten steel edging last?
Corten steel is known for its long-lasting properties. With minimal maintenance, it can last 25 years or more, depending on environmental conditions. Once the protective rust layer has formed, the steel underneath is sealed off from moisture and air, preventing corrosion and ensuring long-term durability even in wet climates.
What width/height should I choose?
Our Corten steel edging comes in three different widths: 100mm, 150mm, and 290mm. The right height depends on your intended use. For lawn edging or flower beds, 100mm or 150mm is typically sufficient. For raised beds, pathways, or areas with loose gravel or soil, the deeper 290mm option provides greater containment and structural support.
What thickness should I use?
We offer Corten edging in 1.5mm, 2mm, and 3mm thicknesses. For most standard garden applications, 1.5mm or 2mm is perfectly suitable. If your edging will be exposed to vehicle traffic, such as along a driveway, or will support heavy materials, 3mm thickness is recommended for added strength and durability.
Can you cut Corten steel edging strips?
Yes, Corten steel can be cut using appropriate metal cutting tools, such as a grinder or hacksaw. However, it’s often easier to overlap any excess material behind the start point for a tidy finish. Don’t forget, we offer a free cutting service, so your edging arrives ready to install with no extra work required. We also offer a wide range of lengths and widths to suit most garden layouts.
How do I install Corten steel edging?
There are several ways to install your edging depending on your preferences and tools. The strips can be welded together for a seamless connection, or you can drill holes and use joining plates that sit below the soil level.
For a quicker installation, use our fold-over Corten pegs to secure the edging in place – just ensure your peg is twice the height of your edging for stability. We recommend using four pegs for the first strip of edging, then three pegs per additional length of edging laid. We also supply corner pieces to create right angles more easily.
What does Corten steel edging look like?
Corten steel arrives as a plain, silver-grey metal, but when exposed to the elements, it begins to oxidise and form a rust-coloured patina. This transformation typically takes 6 to 9 months, depending on weather conditions. The final appearance is a rich, reddish-brown finish that gives your garden an attractive, natural look.
If you'd prefer your edging to arrive pre-weathered, contact our sales team for more information.
What is Corten steel?
Corten steel comes from ‘cor’ –rosion resistance and ‘ten’ -sile strength inherent in steel.
Corten steel is a high-strength, weathering steel alloy designed to resist atmospheric corrosion. It develops a stable, self-protecting rust layer on the surface that acts as a barrier to prevent further corrosion to the steel underneath. That rust does not damage the product in any way, but instead protects it from the elements. This makes it a durable, low-maintenance alternative to traditional mild steel.
The coating on the steel ages over time and exposure to the elements. It takes around a year to fully develop and will produce runoff when you first install it. Please note this runoff can stain, so be mindful of where you install the Corten steel edging. Once the Corten steel has been outside for a few months, that runoff should stop and you should have a beautiful rust-coloured border.
