How it's made: Get ready for a quick science lesson: the process of making aluminium sheet begins with bauxite, a soil-like substance that’s mined from underground. Clay is washed off the bauxite, which then goes through a grinding machine, before being plunged into a hot bath of caustic soda and lime. The caustic soda and lime refine the bauxite, extracting aluminium oxide. The aluminium oxide is filtered and heated, and by now takes the form of white powder. Next, electricity and carbon are combined with the aluminium oxide to create aluminium; an electrical current is passed between a negative carbon cathode and a positive carbon anode. The anode and the oxygen in the aluminium oxide react, producing carbon dioxide. This process creates liquid aluminium, which is moulded into ingots ready to be rolled out into aluminium sheets at the factory. Benefits:
