What our customers say about us

What is brass sheeting?

The bold one With its unmistakable golden hue, everyone knows what brass looks like, but it’s its properties that make this metal such a perennially popular choice. An alloy of copper and zinc, brass sheet is used for everything from screws to radiators. Brass is great for hot forging and engraving; it’s also highly resistant to corrosion, brilliant at conducting heat and boasts a high tensile strength. Our brass sheet, CZ108, is also known as basis brass. It’s extremely flexible and just the job when severe bending is needed. Containing 37% zinc, its high purity makes it workable at both hot and cold temperatures, which is why it’s one of the most sought after varieties of brass sheet. Suppliers of all kinds of sheet metal, we can provide your CZ108 in exactly the size you need, with no minimum order. If it’s polished brass sheet you’re looking for, just let us know – we can arrange for your CZ108 to be buffed before it comes to you. Good for: Chains, hinges, locks, bolts, kick-plates, handles, radiators, signage, tubes, pipes, musical instruments, lamps, light switches, decorative applications and lots more. How it’s made: The desired quantities of zinc and copper are melted and mixed together in a scorching furnace, before being poured into moulds where they cool into solid shapes known as cakes. Once they’ve cooled down, the cakes are fed through rollers, which flatten them into thin sheets. Next, the sheets are ‘scalped’, a process which strips off the thin, outer layers of the metal which may have been subject to oxidisation. The sheets are often then re-heated and annealed, or cold-rolled, a number of times, until the required strength and thickness is reached. Benefits:
  • Conducts heat
  • Workable both hot and cold
  • High tensile strength
  • Resistant to corrosion
Random fact: In Germany in 2008, 15,761 musicians gathered at the WM Stadium, in Leipzig, to form the world’s largest brass band. The colossal group were so huge that they had to follow a conductor on a huge screen, creating a two second delay between the conductor’s instructions and the music.

Brass kitchen splashbacks

Brass splashbacks from Buy Metal Online are carefully selected for their quality, looks and finish. We select the best brass out there and can provide it in standard sizes or cut it to size. Lead time for lacquering can be up to 10 working days from order. Brass is richer and has more character than stainless steel yet is just as easy to work with. All of our brass splashbacks are delivered ready to fit. All splashbacks can be affixed using metal fixings or adhesives. This flexibility is one of the reasons metal splashbacks are so popular! Metal splashbacks have several advantages over plaster or tile. They are easier to fit, requiring just some fixings or adhesive. They are easier to clean, with no grooves and no grout to discolour and they are available in a range of colours and finishes that tile just cannot compete with. Best of all, they are affordable too! They can be cheaper to buy and install than tile, can last longer if looked after properly and are exceptionally durable. All characteristics we look for in our kitchens.

Caring for your brass splashback

Another key advantage of brass is that it is very low maintenance. All you need to keep it clean is some warm water.  Wipe it down regularly and your brass splashback will give you many years of faithful service! If you splash anything acidic, deeply coloured, or abrasive onto your brass splashback, wipe clean immediately to prevent marking or discolouration.

cold rolled steel sheet metal

Cold Rolled Steel Sheet Strong Stuff Hardy, versatile and forever popular, our cold reduced steel sheet is brimming with benefits. Its name comes from the way it is processed down at the steel mill; it is flattened at room temperature, which is positively freezing when compared to the normally-scorching heat used in metal production. Scroll down if you want to find out the science behind this, but all you need to know for now is that the cold-rolling technique produces a steel sheet metal that’s incredibly strong, smooth and slim. Far less ductile than its hot-rolled relative, cold-reduced mild steel sheet makes a brilliant base for enamelling and coating and is a great choice for building, construction and a whole lot more. All our metals come in a huge selection of thicknesses and master sizes and can be trimmed to exactly the size you want, ensuring nothing goes to waste. What’s more, there’s never a minimum order charge, so however much (or little) cold rolled steel sheet you need, we can provide your perfect amount. Good for: automotive components, body panels, construction parts, building, sections and tubes boilers, drums, bathtubs, radiators, domestic appliances, furniture, organic coating, powder coating, electrical goods and many more. How it’s made: At the mill, mild steel sheet (sometimes known as carbon steel or plain steel) is passed through two giant cylinders, which flatten it into shape like an enormous pancake. It’s a similar process to the way our hot rolled steel sheet is made, but the difference is in the temperature. Although the word ‘cold’ makes the process sound rather chilly, it actually happens at room temperature. The key is in the fact that the steel is processed when it’s below its recrystallisation temperature; the cold rolled steel sheets come out smoother, thinner, less malleable and very strong. Benefits:
  • Strong
  • Smooth
  • Thinner
  • Versatile

Located in Dubai, UAE, the Burj Khalifa measures a dizzying 828 metres tall. Surprisingly, because of the tubular technology used, it actually contains half the amount of steel used in the lofty Empire State Building in New York, which measures just over half the Burj Khalifa in height, at 443 metres to its tip. Still, there are 4000 tonnes of steel in Burj Khalifa’s spire alone.

What our customers say about us

What is copper metal sheet?

The conductor Instantly recognisable by its unique, orangey hue, copper sheet is a distinctive, malleable metal that’s up to hundreds of jobs. One of the basic chemical elements (CU in case you’ve forgotten your Periodic Table), it’s been popular for millennia. Our copper sheet plate comes in a range of thicknesses and we can cut it to size, supplying you with just the amount you need. Traditionally, copper’s long list of pluses have made it a firm favourite in industry and construction: after all, it’s soft, brilliant at conducting heat and electricity, resistant to corrosion, and even has antibacterial properties. More recently, though, the metal has come into high demand by architects and interior designers simply because it looks great. Whether you’re looking for form of function, there are limitless uses for copper sheet. UK based, we supply sheet metal to clients all over the country. When you buy copper sheet from us, there’s no minimum order. Just select the amount you need from the box above, or call us to take advantage of our free cutting service. How is it made? Copper ore is mined from deep underground, then taken away to be cleaned, crushed and milled. It then undergoes several chemical processes and put into an electro-refining tank for purification, before it is eventually melted down and cast into ingots, rods, or cakes. To make copper sheet, these chunks of copper are then rolled out flat. Benefits
  • Malleable
  • Conducts heat
  • Conducts electricity
  • Aesthetically stylish
Random fact: Apart from gold, copper is the only metal on the Periodic Table that isn’t silver or grey in colour.

Popular Uses for Corten Steel Edging

Corten steel lawn edging is incredibly versatile and suitable for a wide range of applications. It’s a great long-lasting alternative to sleepers, plastic edging, and log rolls – offering something a little different and architectural for your garden or outdoor space. Typical uses include:
  • • Lawn edging: Create clear, defined lines around turf areas.
  • • Borders and beds: Ideal for shaping garden beds, vegetable patches, and herb gardens.
  • • Area separation: Use as a border edging to divide sections within a garden.
  • • Driveways and gravel paths: Maintain shape and prevent movement of materials.
  • • Courtyards and rockeries: Add structure and contrast.
  • • Raised beds: A perfect edging system for keeping soil and mulch in place.
Corten edging is both functional and decorative, offering a solution for everything from simple garden borders to complex landscaping designs.

Installing Your Corten Steel Edging

Installing your Corten steel edging is straightforward and can be adapted to suit different project types, whether you’re working on a garden path, curved lawn border, or raised bed. Installation methods vary depending on your project and tools available:
  • • Welding or bolting: Join strips together by welding or drilling holes and connecting with metal plates that sit below the finished surface.
  • • Pegs: Secure edging in place using Corten pegs or Corten fold-over pegs. As a general guide, we recommend allowing double the number of edging strips plus one peg. This allows for a peg at the start and end of the run, one in the middle of each strip, and one at each join between strips for a secure installation.
Our fold-over pegs are easy to install – just double your edging height to pick the right size peg. You can also use our Corten edging corner pieces to achieve clean 90-degree angles with ease.
If you need to shape your edging around curved beds or borders, the flexibility of our Corten steel edging makes it easy to bend the strips by hand or with the help of basic tools. This allows for clean, sweeping lines that flow naturally within your garden design. For even quicker installation, particularly in harder ground or for larger areas, take a look at our Shark Edging or Interlocking Shark Edging options which are designed for simplicity, speed, and strength. Corten Steel Edging FAQs

Is this Corten steel edging flexible?

Yes, our Corten steel edging is designed to be flexible and adaptable. The strips can be bent manually or with tools to create smooth curves and shapes, making them perfect for circular beds and borders, as well as meandering garden paths and natural garden layouts. The flexibility also allows you to adjust the shape of your edging on-site for a custom fit.

What is the difference between galvanised and Corten steel garden edging?

The main difference is the appearance and how they resist corrosion. Galvanised steel edging is coated in zinc, giving it a shiny or matte silver finish and protecting it from rust. In contrast, Corten steel edging is designed to develop a rust patina on its surface. This rust layer is not a flaw – it forms a protective coating that seals the steel underneath from further corrosion. Visually, Corten steel provides a warm, natural red-orange look that evolves over time, making it a popular choice for decorative landscaping.

Is this Corten edging suitable for circular beds and borders?

Absolutely. The flexible nature of the steel allows it to be curved and shaped to fit round circular garden beds and borders. It’s ideal for creating flowing shapes, soft edges, and intricate designs that wouldn’t be possible with rigid edging materials.

How long will Corten steel edging last?

Corten steel is known for its long-lasting properties. With minimal maintenance, it can last 25 years or more, depending on environmental conditions. Once the protective rust layer has formed, the steel underneath is sealed off from moisture and air, preventing corrosion and ensuring long-term durability even in wet climates.

What width/height should I choose?

Our Corten steel edging comes in three different widths: 100mm, 150mm, and 290mm. The right height depends on your intended use. For lawn edging or flower beds, 100mm or 150mm is typically sufficient. For raised beds, pathways, or areas with loose gravel or soil, the deeper 290mm option provides greater containment and structural support.

What thickness should I use?

We offer Corten edging in 1.5mm, 2mm, and 3mm thicknesses. For most standard garden applications, 1.5mm or 2mm is perfectly suitable. If your edging will be exposed to vehicle traffic, such as along a driveway, or will support heavy materials, 3mm thickness is recommended for added strength and durability.

Can you cut Corten steel edging strips?

Yes, Corten steel can be cut using appropriate metal cutting tools, such as a grinder or hacksaw. However, it’s often easier to overlap any excess material behind the start point for a tidy finish. Don’t forget, we offer a free cutting service, so your edging arrives ready to install with no extra work required. We also offer a wide range of lengths and widths to suit most garden layouts.

How do I install Corten steel edging?

There are several ways to install your edging depending on your preferences and tools. The strips can be welded together for a seamless connection, or you can drill holes and use joining plates that sit below the soil level.  For a quicker installation, use our fold-over Corten pegs to secure the edging in place – just ensure your peg is twice the height of your edging for stability. We recommend using four pegs for the first strip of edging, then three pegs per additional length of edging laid. We also supply corner pieces to create right angles more easily.

What does Corten steel edging look like?

Corten steel arrives as a plain, silver-grey metal, but when exposed to the elements, it begins to oxidise and form a rust-coloured patina. This transformation typically takes 6 to 9 months, depending on weather conditions. The final appearance is a rich, reddish-brown finish that gives your garden an attractive, natural look.  If you'd prefer your edging to arrive pre-weathered, contact our sales team for more information.

What is Corten steel?

Corten steel comes from ‘cor’ –rosion resistance and ‘ten’ -sile strength inherent in steel.  Corten steel is a high-strength, weathering steel alloy designed to resist atmospheric corrosion. It develops a stable, self-protecting rust layer on the surface that acts as a barrier to prevent further corrosion to the steel underneath. That rust does not damage the product in any way, but instead protects it from the elements. This makes it a durable, low-maintenance alternative to traditional mild steel. The coating on the steel ages over time and exposure to the elements. It takes around a year to fully develop and will produce runoff when you first install it. Please note this runoff can stain, so be mindful of where you install the Corten steel edging. Once the Corten steel has been outside for a few months, that runoff should stop and you should have a beautiful rust-coloured border.

Available in a wide range of heights and lengths, our versatile spiked lawn edging will arrive to you in its natural state, with weathering causing the orange colour to develop within 8-10 months. That distinct coppery hue might look rusty, but the colour's actually down to an oxidisation process that protects the core from further corrosion. Good for: Lawns, flower beds, gardens, yards, allotments, courtyards, borders, rockeries, raised beds, vegetable growing, herb gardens. How it's made:  Corten steel is an alloy, which is why it is so weatherproof. The addition of chromium, nickel and copper to the steel means that as it ages, this metal develops a protective outer layer (that's the rust-coloured coating). We cut the Corten into strips with shark-tooth edging, so you can create neat borders in minutes. What our customers say about us:

Popular Uses for Weathering Steel Edging

For a secure fit, especially in softer ground conditions, we recommend 4 pegs for the first strip of edging, then 3 pegs per additional length of edging laid.
Our fold-over pegs are easy to install – just double your edging height to pick the right size peg. You can also use our Corten edging corner pieces to achieve clean 90-degree angles with ease. We recommend using 2 corner pieces per corner.
Weathering  Steel Edging FAQs

Is this Weathering steel edging flexible?

Yes, our Corten steel edging is designed to be flexible and adaptable. The strips can be bent manually or with tools to create smooth curves and shapes, making them perfect for circular beds and borders, as well as meandering garden paths and natural garden layouts. The flexibility also allows you to adjust the shape of your edging on-site for a custom fit.

What is the difference between galvanised and Weathering steel garden edging?

The main difference is the appearance and how they resist corrosion. Galvanised steel edging is coated in zinc, giving it a shiny or matte silver finish and protecting it from rust. In contrast, Weathering steel edging is designed to develop a rust patina on its surface.

Weathering  steel is known for its long-lasting properties. With minimal maintenance, it can last 25 years or more, depending on environmental conditions. Once the protective rust layer has formed, the steel underneath is sealed off from moisture and air, preventing corrosion and ensuring long-term durability even in wet climates.

What width/height should I choose?

Our Weathering steel edging comes in three different widths: 100mm, 150mm, and 290mm. The right height depends on your intended use. For lawn edging or flower beds, 100mm or 150mm is typically sufficient. For raised beds, pathways, or areas with loose gravel or soil, the deeper 290mm option provides greater containment and structural support.

What thickness should I use?

We offer Weathering edging in 1.5mm, 2mm, and 3mm thicknesses. For most standard garden applications, 1.5mm or 2mm is perfectly suitable. If your edging will be exposed to vehicle traffic, such as along a driveway, or will support heavy materials, 3mm thickness is recommended for added strength and durability.

Can you cut Weathering steel edging strips?

Yes, Corten steel can be cut using appropriate metal cutting tools, such as a grinder or hacksaw. However, it’s often easier to overlap any excess material behind the start point for a tidy finish. Don’t forget, we offer a free cutting service, so your edging arrives ready to install with no extra work required. We also offer a wide range of lengths and widths to suit most garden layouts.

How do I install Weathering steel edging?

There are several ways to install your edging depending on your preferences and tools. The strips can be welded together for a seamless connection, or you can drill holes and use joining plates that sit below the soil level.  For a quicker installation, use our fold-over Corten pegs to secure the edging in place – just ensure your peg is twice the height of your edging for stability. We recommend using four pegs for the first strip of edging, then three pegs per additional length of edging laid. We also supply corner pieces to create right angles more easily.

What does Weathering steel edging look like?

Corten steel arrives as a plain, silver-grey metal, but when exposed to the elements, it begins to oxidise and form a rust-coloured patina. This transformation typically takes 6 to 9 months, depending on weather conditions. The final appearance is a rich, reddish-brown finish that gives your garden an attractive, natural look.  If you'd prefer your edging to arrive pre-weathered, contact our sales team for more information.

What is Weathering steel?

Weathered Corten

Corten steel is also known as weathering steel, or COR-TEN steel. It is specially formulated to provide the strength and stability of traditional steel with an attractive patina. A thin layer of oxide forms on the outside surface of the steel, giving it that attractive burnt orange colour of rust. This layer is thin and does not affect the material’s strength or longevity which is why it is so popular. In fact, that oxidised layer helps to protect the material from the elements and negates the need for finishing, which is why it was invented in the first place! Buy Metal Online sells top grade pre-weathered Corten steel sheet in various thicknesses and sizes. We can cut the sheet into custom size if required. Select the next size up from your required dimensions and request custom cutting on the order form. We will take care of the rest!

How is Corten Steel Manufactured?

Corten steel is manufactured in a foundry, rolled into sheets and cut to size. It is then coated with a special oil mixture that helps create the oxidisation. The oil naturally dries and breaks down, turning to rust. This process can take anywhere between 3 to 10 months and will gradually deepen in colour and character.

Benefits of Rusted Corten Steel

The advantage of buying weathered Corten steel is that you don’t need to wait for 3 - 10 months to enjoy the amazing colour and texture of Corten. This is especially relevant if you are planning on using Corten for interior decorating.

Common Uses

Corten steel is a flexible architectural material that works exceptionally well in many situations. Prime examples of where Corten steel shines is in building facades, architectural installations, garden pieces, public monuments, sculptures or civil engineering projects. • Coverings or facades for buildings.
  • Roofs and decorative features.

Galvanised Lawn Edging FAQs

What is galvanised steel?

Galvanised steel is mild steel that has been coated in zinc to protect it from rust and corrosion. The result is a weather-resistant metal that is ideal for outdoor applications. Learn more about galvanised steel and how it’s made.

Is metal lawn edging any good?

Yes, metal lawn edging is a fantastic alternative to wooden or plastic options. It lasts longer, is more weather-resistant, and provides a cleaner, more professional finish. Galvanised steel edging is especially popular due to its strength and rust resistance.

How do I install galvanised steel lawn edging?

Use galvanised corner pieces and pegs to secure the edging strips, which can be welded or bolted to the edging. For a quicker installation, you can use our galvanised steel fold-over pegs. We recommend using 3 pegs per strip, and ensure the peg is twice the height of your edging for stability. Our galvanised steel lawn edging can also be bent manually or with tools to create curves.

How to cut galvanised lawn edging?

You can cut the edging with metal cutting tools like an angle grinder or hacksaw, but it’s often easier to overlap any excess material behind the start point for a tidy finish.  Buy Metal Online offers galvanised lawn edging in a range of different lengths and heights to suit your garden’s requirements. For convenience, why not take advantage of our free cutting service to have it cut to size before delivery so it’s ready to install without the hassle?

How deep should galvanised garden edging be?

This depends on your project and the intended use. Buy Metal Online’s galvanised steel edging comes in three different heights: 100mm, 150mm, and 290mm.  For lawn borders, 100mm or 150mm height is usually enough. For raised beds, paths or retaining soil, go for the deeper 290mm option which will provide more structural support.

What thickness is best for galvanised steel edging?

At Buy Metal Online, we offer galvanised steel edging in 1.5mm, 2mm, and 3mm thicknesses.  1.5mm or 2mm is suitable for most standard garden applications. Choose 3mm if the edging will be near vehicle traffic (such as along a driveway) or needs to be extra strong.

What is the best material for garden edging?
